Excerpt:

Billy puts his thumb on a panel. A light blinks from red to green. A computerized voice speaks from speakers on the door frame, "Print accepted. Please stand by for retina scan."
Billy makes his eyes wide. A red beam flashes across them.
The computer voice greets him, "Good afternoon, Billy."
Bolts slide. Gears whir. The door unlocks. Billy turns the knob, and pushes it open. "Welcome to Lovecraft Headquarters."
Billy walks into the main entrance hall with his hands held out. The floor and walls are a combination of brick and granite. The ornate light fixtures are bright copper. The staircase up to the second floor is chestnut with a black iron railing. Farther back in the hall is an elevator. The first room off the main hall is a two-story library, packed with hundreds of books. The second room has a big-screen TV and a computer. There's a massive kitchen on the other side and a dining room.
Jackrabbit seems impressed by the big abode. "I thought you weren't rich before your parents… well, you know. I think growing up in a house like this counts as rich."
"We had money. We just didn't live like jerks. My parents worked their butts off to keep this place. They wrote books together on archeological studies. They designed 'The Cthulhu Detective Squad' game. Obviously, they did all right." Billy sighs. "My settlement with the airline paid for other upgrades. Like the computer system." Billy looks around. He points to a security camera. "I call it Harryhausen."
Metal Max shakes his head at the cameras. "Seems kinda paranoid. We're too young to be this paranoid."
Big Jim snorts. "Have you been on the internet recently? Seen the news? Besides, maybe Billy here is just afraid of the dark."
Billy winces. He is afraid of the dark. "I told you guys someone tried to break in, right? It was after my folks died. And you saw that thing on the wing of their plane. I'm not paranoid. I'm just cautious."
"Reddit would agree with you."
Sweet-Tooth looks around at the different rooms in the house. "Principal Sturn probably wanted to steal your stuff to make you more miserable."
Billy drops his ALICE pack on the spic-and-span floor. He likes keeping the house tidy. It's a matter of honoring the home his parents loved. "Who knows. Maybe. Dude super can't be trusted. Detective Carter with the Montclair police is looking into it."
Jackrabbit gawks at his surroundings. "What's the elevator for? How big is this place?"
"First floor is all the normal stuff. Second floor is bedrooms. Third floor is the observatory. The first basement is storage and my dad's workshop. The second basement is—" Billy stops himself. He hasn't had friends over in a long, long time. He probably shouldn't tell these guys any more until he can trust them. "The second basement has a lot of scary things in it. I'm not sure I should take you down there yet."
Billy's dad had the second basement built under the foundation. It's custom. Reinforced. It's filled with all kinds of secret things.
The boys stare at him. Frowns take hold on their faces.
Big Jim crosses his arms again. As the Game Master, he's the most disappointed. "You don't trust us?"
"Not yet. You guys shouldn't trust me, either. We just met."
Metal Max draws his finger across Jackrabbit's throat. "We did kinda walk right into a possible slasher movie trap. Coulda been blood-town if old Lovecraft here was a psycho murder person."
"You made your point, but let's hash everything out first. I didn't bring you guys over because I was feeling lonely." Even though Billy feels very much alone. He shakes his head and tries not to let the emotion take root in his brain. "I brought you here because I have an awesome idea."
He remembers his parents' text: It's dangerous alone.
"And I need your help." Billy motions for the Detectives to follow him into the kitchen.
Billy reaches into a cabinet. He pulls out five short glasses and places them on the big, chestnut island in the middle of the room. He opens the fridge and takes out a pretty, glass container filled with amber liquid. There's a stopper on top of it, which he pops out dramatically.
Billy walks around the group, pouring each glass halfway full with the golden stuff. "You're gonna love this."
Jackrabbit pushes his glass away. "Man, I can't drink that. My mom'll kill me."
Billy eyeballs Jackrabbit. "Your mom won't let you drink iced tea?"
"…Oh. Well. Never mind. Sorry. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I just—"
"Thought I was the weird loner kid with the dead parents who's always in trouble and all that, so why wouldn't I also drink booze and be generally bad?"
"Yeah, that."
Billy raises his glass of iced tea. "I'm not."
The other boys do the same and take a big gulp.
Billy slaps the top of the wooden island. "Iced tea always hits the spot." He looks around at the other boys' faces. "Guys, you're here because I'm ready to create, and fully fund…" Billy smiles. "You ready for this?"
Big Jim wipes his mouth. "Holy crap, just say it."

"The Cthulhu Detective Squad. The real one."
